Modern Country Living: A Sustainable Pool Retreat Designed for Rural WA

Nestled in the heart of regional Western Australia, this award-winning backyard transformation showcases what’s possible when thoughtful design, sustainability, and modern country living come together. Featuring an impressive 11m x 4.45m fibreglass pool in Hamptons Blue, the project was purpose-built to meet the lifestyle needs of a busy rural family—balancing functionality, aesthetics, and long-term durability.

Recognised at the 2025 SPASA Awards, the project received Gold for Sustainable Project and was a Finalist in both Fibreglass Pool up to $120,000 and Pool Landscape Design.

Designed for Regional Living

The client’s brief was clear: they wanted a pool that would not only serve their active family lifestyle but also integrate seamlessly with the rural character of their elevated block. Key requirements included:

  • A spacious pool suitable for leisure and exercise

  • Wind protection for the exposed, elevated site

  • Low-maintenance finishes compatible with regional conditions

  • A landscape that felt organic, not engineered

To bring this vision to life, a team of regional experts was assembled:

  • Landscape Design by Seed Studio – a Wheatbelt-based creative studio known for tailored landscape and graphic design solutions for rural WA

  • Landscaping by Wheatbelt Mini Earthworks – local earthmoving specialists with an eye for functional, rugged beauty

  • Home Built by TR Homes – WA’s most-awarded modular home builder, delivering high-quality homes to regional and remote WA for over 50 years

A Pool that Blends with the Landscape

So how did we achieve a space that feels both functional and completely at home in its surroundings? The 11m pool in Hamptons Blue was the perfect choice, offering ample space for swimming while complementing the clean lines of the home. Surrounding it, travertine paving and frameless glass fencing offer a premium, low-maintenance finish that doesn’t detract from the natural beauty of the rural block.

Rather than relying on structural retaining walls, Seed Studio’s design embraced the site’s slope using site-sourced rock boulders and tiered garden beds to create a soft, organic flow between elevation changes. Corten steel edging and steel ring planters bring structure and contrast while staying true to the rugged aesthetic of the Wheatbelt.

Sustainable Solution to Pool Ownership

A Truly Sustainable Solution

This pool was designed not only for beauty but for sustainability. The system includes:

  • Naked Freshwater System – a chlorine-free water treatment system that’s gentle on skin, hair, and the environment

  • Astral Viron P320XT Variable Speed PumpClimate Care Certified, offering up to $1,200 in annual energy savings

  • Waterco MultiCyclone Pre-Filter – saves thousands of litres of water each year while extending filter life

  • Automatic Water Leveller – reduces evaporation loss and prevents equipment damage

  • EvoHeat Force i19 Heater – an energy-efficient solution to extend the swim season

  • Maytronics M400 Robotic Cleaner – keeping maintenance minimal for a busy country family

Combined with thoughtful, low-impact landscaping choices—such as site-sourced rock boulders, Corten steel edging, and drought-tolerant planting—this approach played a key role in the project being awarded Gold for Sustainable Project at the 2025 SPASA Awards.

Regional pool installations come with unique considerations.

Designed Around Rural Realities

Regional pool installations often come with a unique set of logistical and environmental challenges, and this project was no exception. With a new modular home by TR Homes scheduled for delivery, the pool installation had to be carefully timed to avoid interfering with the home’s placement or construction. The elevated site also required strategic planning for excavation and equipment access, while strong winds typical of the area meant the pool needed to be positioned for both protection and optimal sunlight.

These considerations informed every design decision—from layout to material selection. Raw timber posts, a Surfmist cabana roof, and drought-tolerant landscaping brought together resort-style comfort with rural resilience. The end result is a cohesive outdoor space that feels like a natural extension of the home—functional, family-friendly, and built to thrive in Western Australia's regional conditions.
